Our Story

Hi, my name is Thereasa Black and I’m a single mom.  No, this isn’t the beginning of a confession of an addict, but in a way, I guess it kind of is.  What’s my addiction?  Parenting.  If you asked me a year before my pregnancy, heck if you asked me the day before I found out (coincidentally my friend actually did) I would have told you that I was never going to have a baby.  Now, I don’t know where I would be if I hadn’t.

Brief History

I’ve been to 18 countries (lived in 3), sailed across two oceans, driven an aircraft carrier (and a mini aircraft carrier), run for Congress, graduated from the George Washington Law School, lived in a metal container in the middle of the desert for a year, and started my own business.  But none of that is anything when compared to the adventure of parenting.

New Perspective

I know what you’re thinking… “Give me break.”  But I’m serious.  If I hadn’t become a parent, I never would have started my own business.  I wouldn’t have gained the mantra in life of, “Love what you’re doing or don’t do it.”  I would have been stuck in my box, doing what I was “supposed to do” for the rest of my life.

Learning the Ropes

We made it through our first year, getting to know each other as I finished law school…

We Explored

We traveled Europe and the U.S., campaigned, protested, learned about history and animals…

Then I Deployed

I spent 13 months away from my baby. Every day I felt like I wasn’t going to make it, but we video chatted daily, and I constantly wrote her letters that she can read when she’s older.  All along, my single, male cousin learned to take care of a little girl all by himself.

Preparing for the Entrepreneur Life

While I was deployed, I decided that I would never spend another day doing something that I didn’t want to  do and I set off to start my own business.  I created two solid business plans, built three websites, launched two, wrote three books, started on a fourth, wrote a script for a TV show, and found an investor for my business, all before I came back home.

What's Next?

Next up is my return from deployment (April 2019), move into a new house (May 2019), and business launch (July 2019)!

What Really Happened?

Everything went as planned. I launched Amore Congelato at the farmer’s market and opened a brick & mortar in December 2019.

You can say that we’ve been lucky, I would tend to agree.  We are all products of our experiences.  I wouldn’t take back one of mine, because they have all helped me to grow.  So, follow us on the adventure that we call our life.  It has it’s ups and many downs, but in the end, our story is a simple guide to surviving being a single mom and a boss.  Time to start living for today!
